Smoke damage without much fire
Some of the most frustrating calls we receive in Alamo, TN involve very little fire and a lot of smoke. A pot left on the stove, a puff-back from an oil furnace, a candle that smoldered overnight or a small electrical fire can fill a home with residue and odor while causing almost no burn damage. The home looks mostly intact but smells wrong and shows gray film on every white surface.
Smoke particles are extremely small. They drift into closets, drawers, cabinets, ductwork and fabrics, and settle into porous surfaces like drywall, unfinished wood and upholstery. Restoration means reaching all of those places, not just wiping the visible walls.
Cleaning methodically
We work from the top of each room down, starting with ceilings and light fixtures, then walls, cabinets and floors. Dry soot is removed first with HEPA vacuums and dry chemical sponges, followed by wet cleaning with products suited to the residue type. Metal fixtures and hardware are cleaned promptly because acidic residue can corrode and pit them over time.
Inside cabinets and closets, contents are removed, cleaned and returned after the interior surfaces are done. Window treatments, bedding, clothing and upholstery are cleaned according to fabric type. Electronics are carefully cleaned, since residue can cause problems inside devices.
Air, ducts and odor
HVAC systems pull smoke through the whole building. We inspect and clean ducts, registers and air handler components when residue is found, and replace filters. HEPA air scrubbers run during the work to capture fine particles.
Deodorization comes last, after cleaning removes the source material. Depending on the situation, we may use thermal fogging, hydroxyl generators or sealing primers on surfaces that cannot be fully cleaned. The result should be a home that smells like nothing at all.
